Prefabricated, Yet Customizable Metal Stairs
Panel Built manufactures stair systems for practically any environment from office spaces to manufacturing facilities. Panel Built metal stair can be custom-designed to fit your specific space needs. That means if you need a specific stair layout with multiple landings, U-turn stairs, or a special Rise/Run, we can accommodate these custom designs. Whether you are looking for a small, simple system or you have a highly detailed drawing, Panel Built will work with you to find the best solution.
And Panel Built's metal, steel stair features do not stop there! Panel Built offers a variety of handrail options to increase the safety of your new metal stair system. Handrail pickets, intermediate horizontal railing, mesh siding, and glass siding are just some of the different options we can accommodate. In addition, stair treads come in diamond plate, bar grating, or even cement-filled pans. And both open and closed risers are available.
Bolt Together Design = Quick & Easy Installation
With all of the stair fabrication done in our facility, once your new metal stair system is delivered to the project site, all that is left is the putting it together. Our systems use the same bolt-together Steel Stairs design as our mezzanine systems . This design helps ensure that your stair installation is quick and convenient.
Do You Need IBC or OSHA Metal Stairs?
IBC
Horizontal Run
IBC Stairs have a horizontal run that is approximately 1.5 times the deck height, not including landings or handrail extenders, so a 10’ high mezzanine deck would have an approximate 15’long stairwell.
Risers & Tread
IBC Stairs typically have a 7” closed riser and an 11” tread.
Stair Width
IBC Stairs are minimum 36” wide in most cases.
Railings and Guardrail
IBC Stairs require rails of 42” high and handrails of 34” high on both sides of the stairwell.
Landings
IBC also requires an intermediate landing on stairwells for stairwells over 12’ high, as well as handrail extensions at the bottom landing.
OSHA
Horizontal Run
With OSHA Stairs the horizontal run and the length of the stairwell, is approximately equal to the height of the deck. For instance if the mezzanine deck height is 10’, the stairwell is 10’ long.
Risers & Tread
OSHA Stairs typically have an 8” closed riser and an 9” tread.
Stair Width
OSHA Stairs are minimum 22”wide.
Railings and Guardrail
OSHA requires railings on open sides of stairwells and a handrail on at least on side, preferably the right side descending at 34” high.
Landings
Both OSHA and IBC require landings at the top and bottom of the stairs, although IBC landings are larger, typically 4’ square.

With our bolt-together stair assembly, stair installation has never been easier. Panel Built offers all the needed hardware and connectors to fully complete your project. Further, Panel Built has a team of installers across the country to take care of the assembly for you!
Interior & Exterior Stair Options
Our standard stair systems are built to withstand harsh industrial environments with our powder coated paint. However, if your stair system is for an exterior application, Panel Built can take care of those too! Our exterior metal stairs utilize an exterior rated powder-coated paint to withstand the rigors of outdoor weather and abuse. Additionally, the Panel Built stairs can be entirely hot-dipped galvanized to give it a weatherproof, zinc coating, allowing for long life outdoors.
